All fasteners on furniture manufactured by Berlin Gardens are stainless steel with most fasteners being chromeplated stainless steel. Chrome-plated stainless steel is one of the most corrosive-resistant fasteners on the market. However, in extreme conditions such as coastal areas, while chrome-plated stainless steel will be less likely to rust, it is still recommended to regularly rinse it with fresh water to ensure the longevity of your furniture and fasteners.
Poly outdoor furniture is created from poly-lumber. “Poly” is short for high-density polyethylene (HDPE). This lumber is created from 95-percent recycled milk jugs and known for its durability and strength. The company that creates the lumber, Tangent USA, recycles more than 210,000,000 milk jugs each year. In an age where it is an imperative that we care for our environment, reusing materials such as plastic is an integral part of making sure that we are being good stewards to the planet but also delivering a great product to our customers. In fact, all of our poly products come with a 20-year warranty.
Poly furniture is made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a recyclable plastic that never needs to be painted or stained. It will not rot or splinter, and it contains an added UV protective agent to resist fading. Poly furniture is not affected by most corrosive substances, and will not promote bacterial growth.

The image above, showing the chair in the upright position, is identical to the original in position and comfort. The image in the middle shows the chair reclined to 50 degrees....a very comfortable snoozing position. The back is supported by the arms and curved back seat slat, and all pieces are screwed and glued with Gorilla Glue for the necessary strength. A recent Customer picked up some plans at my home and sat in one of the final prototypes. He found it very comfortable in the reclined position, and strong enough to hold his over 6' height and 210 lb. weight.
Pine: While pine takes more maintenance than teak, it is far more affordable. This light wood slowly fades to an attractive gray. As a softwood, it’s more susceptible to dings, scratches, and, unfortunately, bugs. You’ll need to refinish it every year or two to keep the wood looking its best and to help protect it from the weather. But if upkeep doesn’t worry you and you’re on a tight budget, pine is an excellent choice.
I used the plastic washers and tubes (highly recommend) and cedar boards but will try clear pine next.
I didn’t realize how important it is to evaluate the weather conditions of your area and aesthetics when choosing a material for outdoor furniture. My sister just bought a home that has a nice patio in the backyard. Hopefully, these tips can help her choose a furniture set that will allow her to entertain guests in comfort.
